Ted Cruz denounces Nathan Bedford Forrest Day in Tennessee: ‘This is WRONG.’
Ted Cruz, a Republican Texas senator and former presidential candidate, denounced Tennessee’s decision to hold a day in observation for a Confederate general and early Ku Klux Klan leader.
Nathan Bedford Forrest was responsible for one of the worst slaughters of black troops during the Civil War. Gov. Bill Lee signed a proclamation earlier this week making Saturday Nathan Bedford Forrest Day.
The proclamation quickly drew backlash, including from Cruz. In a tweet on Friday, he encouraged Lee to change the law requiring the day of observation.
“This is wrong,” Cruz tweeted. “Nathan Bedford Forrest was a Confederate general & delegate to the 1868 Democratic Convention. He was also a slave trader & 1st Grand Wizard of the KKK. Tennessee should not have an official day honoring him. Change the law.”
