A group of Democrats in the Senate will submit a constitutional amendment to abolish the electoral college this week, the latest sign that the idea is to get public support in the Democratic Party.

The amendment is headed by Sen. Brian Shats, a Democrat from Hawaii, who will initially be supported by Democratic Sen. Dick Dorpin of Illinois, Dean Finstein of California and New York-based Kersten Gilbrand, who will run for president. It will be presented on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the plans.
