The top Republican in the US Senate on Wednesday slammed a radical electoral reform bill passed by the Democratic-led House of Representatives earlier this month, calling it a "partisan takeover."
Democrats say the bill, which modernizes voting procedures and asks states to turn the amendment on congressional district lines into independent commissions, is necessary to outpace Republican efforts to make voting more difficult across the country.
"This is clearly a unilateral effort to rewrite the rules of the political system," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said at the start of the rules committee hearing. We have to find ways to rebuild trust, not destroy it anymore. And that is precisely what the partisan takeover will guarantee. "
