Newsom's Dire Warning contributed to California's Recall wave

On the morning of Aug. 5, California Gov. Gavin Newsom's campaign delivered an alarming four-word message that acted as the shock Democrats needed to take a recall election that might remove him from office seriously: “This recall is getting close.”

Newsom's warning in a fundraising email came just days after a survey revealed that the once-popular Democratic governor, who was won in a landslide in 2018, was confronting the unfathomable possibility of losing his job in a state which hadn't elected a Gop in a gubernatorial contest in 15 years.

The race is “close enough to start thinking about what it’d be like if we had a Republican governor in California. Sorry to put the thought in your head, but it’s true,” Newsom’s campaign wrote.

Gavin Newsom handily reversed the attempt on Tuesday to recall him into his first term of fewer than 3 years. Unfinished results have shown him to be leading to a landslide victory with over 65% of the votes.

The win of Newsom also gives him a spectacular return narrative he will probably use in the attempt to increase his support before a 2022 re-election, meanwhile trying to bring his name back into the debate about the future presidential hopefuls.
