New York Police arrest man for attacking Asian woman in a hate crime case
New York City Police said on Wednesday they have arrested a convicted murderer for attacking a 65-year-old Asian woman on a street, an assault recorded in a video that went viral amid a spike in hate crimes against Asians in the United States.
Police said Elliott, who was under surveillance for life after serving a prison sentence for killing his mother, faces multiple charges of assault and hate crimes. New York Police said their hate crime force had been searching for the attacker since noon Monday. Police said the attacker was heard making anti-Asian statements during the attack.
Concern about hate crimes against Asians increased when six Asian women were among eight people shot dead this month at health resorts in the Atlanta area. A 21-year-old man was charged with the murders. Police have yet to specify the motive.
