Democratic voting rights bill opposition is linked to violence on January 6: Schumer

Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) started the new year with a pointed attack on Republican opposition to Democratic voting rights reforms on Jan. 3, claiming that the GOP's opposition can be attributed to "domestic extremists" who tried to "destroy our Republic" in the Capitol breach of Jan. 6, 2021.

In a letter to his Senate Democratic colleagues on Jan 3, Schumer declared that domestic violent extremists were trying to destroy our republic. They were inspired by conspiracy theories and the rage of a vengeful former president.

"As we can all see, the attacks on our democracy are continuing. In fact, they've just become faster. Republican officials in states across the country have seized on the former president's Big Lie about widespread voter fraud to enact anti-democratic legislation and seize control of traditionally non-partisan election administration functions, much like the violent insurgents who stormed the U.S. Capitol nearly a year ago."
