Border guards rescue migrants in California after traffickers abandon them
Southern California border agents have rescued many migrants after being abandoned by human traffickers. Agents found the migrants, including an unaccompanied minor, in semi-freezing conditions.
Border agents in the El Centro sector received information Tuesday night from Mexican government officials about a group of immigrants who entered the United States illegally and were abandoned by human smugglers, according to information obtained from patrol officials. Mexican officials told USBP's Foreign Operations Office that smugglers abandoned the migrants on Otay Mountain while they slept.
Authorities said the smugglers left the migrants in near-freezing temperatures. Authorities said high winds and a shortage of food and water added to the risks.
